Paid Engagement Model

Why I Killed the Free Consultation

Free consultations attract shoppers, not decision-makers. The case for paid engagement in capital strategy.

Why I Killed the Free Consultation

“Free consultation” is the most expensive phrase in professional services.

It costs you the client's attention before the call starts. Free advice is weighed as free — skimmed, second-guessed, shopped against three other free calls booked the same week. The person receiving it has invested nothing, so they act like it.

It costs you positioning. The moment strategy is free, you've announced that the real product is whatever you sell afterward — and the client spends the entire conversation bracing for the pitch instead of engaging with the thinking.

And it costs you the right clients. Serious operators don't want free. They want committed. A business owner navigating a six-figure capital decision is not looking for the advisor with the lowest barrier to entry. They're looking for the one whose time is clearly worth something.

What paid engagement changes

When the first interaction has a fee attached, three things happen immediately.

The audience self-selects. Shoppers evaporate. Decision-makers remain. Your calendar stops being a lead-qualification tool and becomes actual work.

The advice gets implemented. People execute what they pay for. The same recommendation, delivered free, gets filed away; delivered inside a paid engagement, it gets acted on within the week.

The relationship starts as a professional one. Not vendor-and-prospect. Advisor-and-client, from minute one.

The objection everyone raises

“Won't you lose leads?” Yes — the ones that were never going to convert, only consume. What remains is smaller in volume and dramatically larger in value. Fewer conversations, better clients, cleaner economics.

Strategy is the product. Products have prices.
